Warning Signs of an Unstable Foundation

Marietta GA Foundation Repair ContractorsJust as with your health, finding issues and problems through early detection is the best way to treat problems and to prevent further, more severe, complications from occurring. Your home is probably the largest investment that you will ever make, so taking action early when major problems become apparent is the best way to secure your home. However, you must recognize the signs of an unstable foundation so that you can take action to repair it. Foundation problems will get worse over time, but catching signs of damage early on can save you a great deal of time and money.

There are often very specific warning signs that people may notice yet be unaware of what they are revealing about their home’s stability. Exterior warning signs of a foundational issue include:

  • Brick Cracks – a “stair stepping” pattern near windows and doors or near the ground and corners indicate a sunken footing.
  • Exterior Mildew – mildew growing on base of the exterior walls indicates that there is improper drainage around the foundation.
  • Foundation Cracks – cracks and separation of patios, sidewalks, and exterior slabs as well as steps pulling away from a porch indicate unstable soil beneath the foundation.
  • Cracked Flooring – cracked or broken tile indicates that there are cracks in the foundation beneath the flooring.
  • Displaced Molding – gaps between the ceiling and the crown molding indicate that the home is shifting on the foundation and is unstable.
  • Cracks in Interior Walls – cracks in Sheetrock or plaster (typically found above or below windows) indicate that walls may be sinking due to soil bearing failure.
  • Fractured Basement Walls – soil pressure and/or movement of earth below the foundation cause horizontal cracks in the basement walls.
  • Sticking Door and Windows – doors and windows that “stick” or are hard to open, or doors and windows that look crooked in their casing are indicators that the framing of the house is under stress.

None of these signs should be ignored because they can cost a great deal of time and money to repair if damage is allowed to progress. Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs has a lifetime of experience repairing foundational issues of homes. 85 years of experience has given us the reputation of exceptional service and outstanding results.

Chimney Inspections

Atlanta GA Chimney InspectorsFall is just around the corner and temperatures will begin to drop, making homes much cooler than during the spring and summer months. While fall brings forth pumpkins, hay rides, adventures, and wonderful holidays, fall also brings crisp air with chilly mornings and nights. There is nothing cozier than a fire in a fireplace, gathered around by your family and closest friends. The flickers of the fire, the crackling of the burning wood, the smells that fill the air – all of these bring forth many memories. However, have you ever thought about the safety of your fireplace?

Many homeowners do not give much thought to the safety of their fireplaces before lighting them each year. In fact, most homeowners will admit that they never thought to call for a chimney inspection, they simply called when something went wrong and needed to be fixed.

A chimney inspection is an important step in keeping your home and family safe. Before a fire is lit in a fireplace, the chimney should be inspected. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that chimneys and fireplaces be inspected at least once a year to ensure that they are operating safely and effectively.

At Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs, we are the experts in Georgia for chimney inspections. We are committed to providing three different levels of inspection to ensure that the structural stability of a chimney is sound and that the chimney is working properly. We have been offering our trusted services for more than 80 years, and we are the trusted source here in Georgia that has earned our reputation for providing customers with the most outstanding services. It is of utmost importance to know without any doubt that your fire box, smoke chamber, flue pipes, and caps are in good working order along with the structural elements of your chimney. Fires, explosions, and chimneys falling can happen at any moment when a chimney is not safe.

Protect your home and loved ones by calling Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs today.

A deck or covered porch that is unlevel is a significant concern to homeowners because drastic consequences can occur. Please take note that these signs are extremely telling that your deck’s safety has been compromised, and we at Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs highly suggest that you do not allow anyone out on your deck. Stone Foundations

Atlanta GA Stone Foundation Repair ContractorsStone foundations were standard construction in homes built in the early 1900s and before. Today, building construction has developed and advanced, and homes with stone foundations are often a source of frequent worry to owners of old homes and/or potential buyers. Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs has been helping homeowners for over 85 years secure their properties so that they are resting on a stable foundation. Anglin’s is the name to trust for the highest quality foundation repair in and around Atlanta.

Houses support a great deal of weight that must be supported for years and years in the future. Having an unqualified foundation structure can compromise the entire structure, not to mention produce sloping floors, cracked walls, and other damage. Repairing a home’s foundation requires the knowledge and expertise of the experts. At Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repair, our contractors professionally inspect the property to determine the most suitable repair methods.

Homes built upon stone foundations require specific correction in order for the home to remain standing and for it to be a quality dwelling place for a family. The most common damage to a home built on a stone foundation is that the mortar that was used to hold the stones in place has begun to flake away and compromise its strength. As the mortar continues to erode, the remaining substance between the stones begins to fall out and shift around.

Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs has the experience and know how to protect your property and reestablish its integrity. Our motto is that we will Fix it for Life, the First time. We understand that your property is a huge investment, and we do not take the responsibility for repairing it lightly. We have the solutions, expert experience, equipment, and proven value for you.

How’s Your Garage Holding Up?

Foundation Repair Specialists Marietta GAYou open your garage door, pull your vehicle inside, close the garage door, and think nothing of it until you need to open the door again. However, it is important that you take the time to regularly inspect the foundation of your garage to determine how it is holding up. Most garages are built upon concrete slab foundations, and are, therefore, inclined to crack and settle. Special attention should be given to the status of your garage’s foundation as it is attached to your home and any issue that your garage may have can translate to problems inside the home. If you notice any signs of foundational damage of your garage (i.e. cracks in the walls, cracks in the floor, uneven floors, separation from the garage trim from the exterior of your home, or stair-step cracks in the exterior brick surrounding your garage door opening) it is time to call in the experts at Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repair.

Georgia is known for its infamous “Georgia Red Clay” and how it is not the ideal soil for most things. This includes offering structural support to a slab foundation. A slab foundation relies on the soil beneath it to offer support and to absorb tension as the moisture content will fluctuate again and again. Many times homeowners find that the reason behind their garage foundation issues is due to incompetency on the builder’s part to ensure that the quality of the soil is optimal for building.

Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repair has been helping homeowners and commercial property owners for more than 85 years correct problems with their foundations. Our experts have built our impeccable reputation by fixing the problem and preventing future issues from arising. As John Anglin says, “We fix it for life, the first time.” Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repair is dedicated to helping you find the solution you need in order to save your property. Call us today.

If Your Deck is Leaning, Don’t Ignore It!

Marietta GA Deck Post Repair ContractorsA back deck is one of the key features of any home. It is where families and friends gather to cookout, parents enjoy watching their children play in the backyard, and where countless memories are made. A back deck is also a common selling point of a home because buyers also imagine making their own memories out there. However, a back deck that does not have a proper foundation can settle over time and cause significant and pricey repairs. It is incredibly important that any signs of deck settling (i.e. leaning, slanting, or unstable) should never be ignored. These are signs that the deck has started to sink into the ground or “settle,” and will continue to sink until the deck itself falls.

Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs has been in business for over 85 years with the same phone number for the last 36 years. Our reputation of excellence and reliability has made us the name that Atlanta trusts for foundation issues, including deck post repair. Anglin’s has helped hundreds of Atlanta residents repair issues with their decks by correcting issues with footings and foundations. In older homes, settling often occurs due to a less than ideal foundation. Georgia red clay is infamous for its inability to withstand heavy loads for long periods of time. However, with newer homes built by builders who should have the knowledge of foundation concerns as they relate to soil conditions, deck settling is often from pure negligence.

At Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs, we are the most reputable choice for correcting deck posts and support column problems in order to stabilize settling posts, footings, and foundations. Our extensive experience of structural and masonry work has made us the experts for handling even the most severe home issues. We offer a lifetime warranty on our work because we stand behind our excellent services. Before you buy a home, before you sell a home, or at the moment you notice something “off” about your back deck – don’t ignore it – call Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs. We fix it for life, the first time.

A Cracked Chimney Should Never Be Ignored

Marietta GA Chimney Repair Services

Brick leaning chimney – before

Chimneys are a beautiful focal point of a home or building. They add character, a sense of timeless beauty, and are often a huge selling point for buyers. However, while these structures can be beautiful in appearance, they can also be extremely dangerous. Any time there is a crack in a chimney, it signifies that there is some sort of issue with how it is aligned or attached to the home, or that there is a foundational issue. Any of these can cause threats to the chimney falling and injuring or killing anyone within the vicinity. That information is not mean to scare you, but to make you aware that a cracked chimney should never be ignored!

All parts of a home require a solid footing on which to rest. Front porches, back decks, retaining walls, and chimneys are all attached to homes and, therefore, also require a proper foundation. When a home’s foundation is not properly set before construction very serious, and expensive, issues will most likely occur. When a chimney begins to react to an improper foundation, cracks in the chimney are very common. However, while it may be a common occurrence due to an improper foundation, failing to hire a professional chimney foundation expert can cause dire consequences. The entire chimney can separate from the home and fall, killing people or pets and damaging anything else in its path.

Custom Foundation Support System

Atlanta GA Home Foundation Repair ContractorsA solid foundation is necessary to support any type of structure in order to bear loads that that are within or on the building. Both the footings and the foundation distribute the load that is put upon the bearing surface. These are designed to keep a building level and plumb and to keep settling to a minimum. Homes and buildings built in an area with loose soil will need to have soil bearing characteristics taken into consideration. At Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs, we have the knowledge and experience to build a custom foundation support system that is specific to the area where a home or commercial property is proposed to be located.

Not all soil is ideal for building on. Here in the Southeast, our soil can be extremely diverse within different areas of a single state. Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs has over 85 years of experience in building homes and commercial properties all over Georgia. You can click through our website and find examples of our custom foundation support systems. In fact, we have developed a foundation support system for a large log home that was built on a 100-year-old flood plain with very loose soil. We used our capability and know-how to develop proper footings and foundation slab that has held that home with the strongest support. After more than sixteen years, there have been no signs of settling – that is a huge accomplishment that we are proud to boast about.

If you are interested in building, please take as much time and consideration into the footings and foundation of your home as you do choosing a house plan. At Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repair, we offer a lifetime of structural and masonry experience that is backed by a lifetime warranty. Our number one goal is to get it right, the first time. Who are you going to call? Anglin’s

oldhouseA bit too late for that.

We thought we could fix anything but a broken heart (which we are working on) but we were wrong! Some things even we cannot repair.

My wife and I were traveling in our RV on the East Coast of Maine near Bar Harbor, when we sighted this interesting old house. We turned our RV around and stopped. I got out my Nikon digital camera and shot some photos and videos. ‘What a waste,’ I thought.

Old houses are almost as precious as “old dogs and children and watermelon wine.” They should not be neglected.

Thankfully, all is not lost. This old house still holds meaning, merit and value. Makers of unique, custom hand-crafted antique furniture love to take old houses like this – along with old barns, buildings and structures of any kind – and salvage the usable wood.

They salvage aged barn wood, siding, rafters, floor joists, wood beams, posts and other pieces of lumber. Then they clean and preserve the wood before handcrafting it into beautiful pieces of furniture.

One of these companies is Green Gables Furniture. My wife and I have purchased several of their custom hand-crafted furniture pieces. We love it!

Green Gables Furniture can take ‘disasters about to happen’ like the building pictured above and transform deterioration into fresh, new creations.

Anglin’s may not be able to compete with Mother Nature, but when given early warnings of structural problems or failures, we have solutions designed to work for almost any structure.

Don’t let your home deteriorate, we’re specialists at restoring buildings to safety and soundness.

Bowed Basement Walls

Atlanta GA Basement Wall Repair ContractorsUnstable soil is a home’s worst enemy. Expansive clay and improperly compacted fill can leave foundations unevenly supported, triggering settlement and cracking of the basement. One common problem associated with poor construction or soil pressure for load bearing basement walls is that they will bow inward or outward. Not only can this devalue a home, but it can also be a safety concern for all family members or guests of the home. At Anglin’s Foundation and Masonry Repairs, we have been providing experienced professional basement wall repairs and foundation repairs in Atlanta since 1930. Our name has become synonymous with correcting all foundation issues, and we bring a lifetime of structural and masonry experience to every job, guaranteed.

When basements begin to show signs of foundational issues, the entire home is very close to having major structural problems. It is important to have any issue with your basement addressed immediately to avoid cracks and damage in the interior wood framing of your house or damage to the exterior brick, stone, or siding. The longer foundational issues exist, the more costly the repairs will become because they will continue to expand and affect multiple areas. Failure to correct these issues can threaten the entire structural integrity of your home. Fortunately, it is possible to rescue settled foundations and basement walls, and Anglin’s Foundation and Masonry Repairs is the name to trust. We can handle any type of basement foundation repair, and we have been doing so for over 85 years.

If you have noticed any signs of settling in your basement, please contact Anglin’s Foundation and Masonry Repair today. We offer free inspections, and we guarantee to fix your foundation problems for life. Your home is your largest investment, and we are here to help you protect your investment for years and years to come.
