DIY Home Inspection

image025As the year draws to a close, there is no better time than to do a thorough DIY inspection of your home. As your largest investment, it is imperative that you take the necessary means to make sure that your home is doing well and holding up properly. However, as important an investment as your home is, its health is often not given a moment’s thought until one of two things occurs: 1) you plan on moving and need to put it on the market, or 2) something goes wrong. Waiting until the last minute to take care of your home often leaves you with a severe and expensive issue to deal with. While nothing beats a professional inspection of your home, doing a DIY examination of your property can help you catch issues before they become major problems.

Leaning Chimneys Should Not Be Ignored

ca2It is not uncommon for home buyers to overlook signs of wear and tear, cosmetic changes, and landscaping issues. In fact, many people specifically hunt these homes out in order to put their own spin on them. However, one sign that should never be ignored is a leaning chimney.

A leaning chimney is a huge indicator that there is a foundational issue with the home’s structure. Home builders now know that a chimney needs its own foundation footing in order to support its enormous weight. However, 60, 85, 100 years ago, it was very common for a chimney to simply be attached to a home and left to support itself or use the support of the house. Because a house is never meant to support an excessive amount of weight, the house will begin to give over time. A leaning chimney will lean in any direction. It can lean out, pulling away from the house; it can lean to either side; or it can begin to lean in toward the home with the risk of falling on top of the roof. All of these scenarios have the possibility for falling and life-threatening results.

Cracked Chimney Repair

new1Any type of issue with your chimney can be dangerous and can pose a serious safety threat to your home and family. Problems such as gaps, cracks, and spalling in the chimney’s construction can present serious risks to your home and family. With these issues, the chimney is a huge risk factor to the home. Masonry chimneys must be thoroughly inspected and kept in good condition. Whether they are constructed of brick or stone, they require a solid footing on which to rest so that they are soundly supported. At Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs, we are the experts in chimney repair and restoration here in Atlanta.

According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than anything else. Because of their location on a home, chimneys can deteriorate by constant exposure to the weather. Whether your home has a full-length chimney that runs up the side of your home or only a portion of the chimney extends from the roof, its constant exposure to rain, wind, freezing temperatures, and occasional snow here in Georgia leaves is vulnerable to deterioration.

Masonry chimneys are constructed of a variety of masonry and metal materials: brick, mortar, concrete, stone, concrete block, stone, flue tile, steel, and cast iron. All of these materials are adversely affected by direct contact with water or water penetration. With prolonged exposure to the weather, all of these materials will suffer accelerated deterioration. The freeze/thaw process causes the most damaging stress to a masonry chimney because moisture penetrates the chimney materials, freezes, and causes expansion. This puts undue stress on the bricks, stones, and mortar that are holding the chimney together and are trying to hold the chimney in its proper place against the home.

At Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs, we are committed to providing exceptional chimney repair. We will inspect your entire chimney in order to find the root cause of the issue and accurately diagnose the masonry damage that needs to be repaired. Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs has over 85 years of experience in all aspects of chimney foundation repair right here in Atlanta. New Year – Time to Inspect Your Home

Atlanta GA Foundation RepairsWith a new year now underway, many people have made goals and resolutions that they hope to keep throughout the year in order to help them progress in certain areas. New Year’s resolutions are great motivators to kick-start goals, but there is one New Year’s resolution that may not be on the “most popular” list – but it should be. With each New Year, it is important that you take the time to inspect your home.

Your home is likely to be the largest expense that you will ever make in your entire life. Whether you are fortunate enough to pay off your home, or you have a 30-year mortgage that is just underway, protecting this investment should be one of your top priorities.

A home inspection can be a relatively easy process. You can hire someone to do it, or you can simply walk around and throughout your entire home and do it yourself. Your eyes are your best tools for inspecting your home. Look for cracks! Cracks in your walls, cracks in your ceilings, cracks in your floors, cracks in your foundation, cracks in your basement walls, cracks in your garage, or cracks in your exterior can all mean the same thing: something is wrong. Cracks found anywhere in a home are an indicator that settling is going on in the foundation of your home. Do not be fooled by thinking that “settling is normal.” While this is true, it is very slight settling that is normal – not settling that results in cracks and the compromise of your home’s stability and integrity.

Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs has been in business for over 85 years serving the greater Atlanta area with foundation repairs. Most of these repairs have centered on issues with lacking foundation support that has resulted in the impairment of a home’s structure.

With a New Year, it is important to remember that your home needs YOU to be its biggest asset. Walking around your home, inside and out, can save you tens of thousands of dollars. At Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs, we are here for you when you need us. But we are also here to remind you that simple steps that you take can help to make sure that you won’t need us!

Keep Your Fireplace Safe!

Marietta GA Chimney Repair Contractors

With winter finally here, cold temperatures are becoming a regular part of our days here in Georgia. Many people enjoy having a fire in the fireplace during the dark and cold winter evenings and nights as a way to keep warm and to cozy up for family time. However, a fireplace that is not safe can be a danger to your family and your home. It is important to take the time to inspect your fireplace on a regular basis, but especially when it is time for it to be used often.

The best tools you have to keep your fireplace safe are your eyes. Visual inspections of the inside and outside of your fireplace can help to ensure that your fireplace is in good shape. The following are things to check for:

  • Make sure the chimney cap is present and in good shape
  • No birds have made a nest or put debris in or on the cap
  • The mortar and brick are not crumbling
  • No tree limbs are above or near the chimney
  • Make sure the chimney rises at least two feet above the roof
  • The chimney is not leaning or tilting
  • The roof flashing is tight against the chimney
  • Gas logs, if used, need to be in good working condition and in the proper position
  • The hearth and firebox must have no cracks – this is a serious issue
  • With the fireplace off/un-lit, you should be able to look up the chimney and see daylight at the top
  • Check for signs of moisture inside the firebox

If you find that there are any issues with any of these, it is important that you have a professional fireplace and chimney inspection done. Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs is the name that Atlanta trusts for exceptional repairs to sinking foundations, steps, porches, leaning chimneys, cracked basement walls, and more. Atlanta GA Chimney InspectorsFall is just around the corner and temperatures will begin to drop, making homes much cooler than during the spring and summer months. While fall brings forth pumpkins, hay rides, adventures, and wonderful holidays, fall also brings crisp air with chilly mornings and nights. There is nothing cozier than a fire in a fireplace, gathered around by your family and closest friends. The flickers of the fire, the crackling of the burning wood, the smells that fill the air – all of these bring forth many memories. However, have you ever thought about the safety of your fireplace?

Many homeowners do not give much thought to the safety of their fireplaces before lighting them each year. In fact, most homeowners will admit that they never thought to call for a chimney inspection, they simply called when something went wrong and needed to be fixed.

A chimney inspection is an important step in keeping your home and family safe. Before a fire is lit in a fireplace, the chimney should be inspected.
