Why steps and stoops sink

The footings under an entryway are often the first part of a home to show soil trouble. They are frequently poured on uncompacted fill dirt instead of solid ground. Add water draining toward the house, and the soil softens and washes out, leaving voids under the concrete. Common culprits:

• Brick or stone set without a proper footing beneath it
• No rebar or steel reinforcement in the original footing
• Poorly compacted or soft fill soil under the steps
• Drainage that channels water into the base of the entryway

How we fix it

We lift the steps and stoop back to their original elevation with top-brand hydraulic equipment, and where the footing has failed, we drive steel piers down to stable soil to hold everything permanently in place. Then our masons repair the cracked brick and mortar and match the existing masonry. In most cases the surrounding landscaping stays undisturbed.
