Decatur is the seat of DeKalb County and has a dense core of pre-war bungalows, most of them on crawl spaces.

This is Piedmont red clay over weathered granite, which is the ground most of Metro Atlanta is built on and the reason most of what we fix traces back underneath the house. That clay swells when it takes on water and shrinks back when it dries, season after season. Footings settle unevenly, walls take pressure they were not built for, and a chimney that stood straight for fifty years starts to lean.

Most of what we are called out to here predates the war, which means real masonry: brick veneer tied back to the structure, chimneys built to serve fireplaces that were the heat rather than the feature, and crawl spaces rather than slabs. Those chimneys are the ones that lean, and that veneer is the one that cracks in stair steps up a corner.
