This is Piedmont red clay over weathered granite, which is the ground most of Metro Atlanta is built on and the reason most of what we fix traces back underneath the house. That clay swells when it takes on water and shrinks back when it dries, season after season. Footings settle unevenly, walls take pressure they were not built for, and a chimney that stood straight for fifty years starts to lean.

The houses we work on here run across a wide range of ages, which means we get the whole spread: original masonry and leaning chimneys on the older streets, and bowing basement walls and settling stoops in the newer subdivisions. What the two have in common is the clay underneath them.
