Smyrna replaced much of its older stock with infill, so blocks can be sixty years apart.

This is Piedmont red clay over weathered granite, which is the ground most of Metro Atlanta is built on and the reason most of what we fix traces back underneath the house. That clay swells when it takes on water and shrinks back when it dries, season after season. Footings settle unevenly, walls take pressure they were not built for, and a chimney that stood straight for fifty years starts to lean.

A lot of the houses we work on in Smyrna went up between the 1950s and the 1980s, so we see ranches and split-levels on crawl spaces and early slabs. Houses of that age have had sixty years of the clay working underneath them, and the complaints tend to be sloping floors, doors that stopped closing, and supports under a floor that have given way out of sight.
