When Should I Consider a Pre-Construction / New Construction Helical Piers Support System? Southwest Marietta, GA
A person is working in a dug trench, setting up rebar. The ground is reddish-brown, and a yellow construction vehicle is partially visible on the left.

Building a new structure in Georgia is an exciting yet complex endeavor. One of the most critical steps in this process is ensuring your foundation is solid. This is where helical piers come into play. If you’re in the planning stages of a construction project, understanding the roles and benefits of helical piers is crucial. But when exactly should you consider incorporating a pre-construction/new construction helical pier support system?

What Are Helical Piers?

Helical piers are deep foundation systems that provide support to structures by transferring the load to deeper, more stable soil layers. Alexander Mitchell patented them in the mid-1800s. Since then, engineers have successfully implemented this innovative technique for foundation stabilization worldwide.

These steel piers, shaped like large screws, are driven into the ground until they reach adequate bearing capacity. Their design allows them to resist vertical, lateral and uplift forces, making them an excellent choice for various types of soils and loads.

When Should I Install Pre-Construction Helical Piers?

When should you consider installing Helical Piers? Here are some recommended scenarios:

  1. Weak or Unstable Soil Conditions: If your building site is located in an area with loose, expansive or poorly compacted soils, helical piers are often a wise choice. They penetrate through these challenging materials and reach more stable soil layers, ensuring that your structure has a solid foundation.
  2. High Water Table: Sites with a high water table can pose significant challenges for foundation stability. If the ground is frequently saturated, conventional foundation methods may not provide the necessary support. Helical piers can be installed below the water table and provide reliable support even in wet conditions.
  3. Erosion-Prone Areas: If your construction site is near a body of water or in an area prone to erosion, helical piers can help mitigate risks. They are less susceptible to the shifting ground caused by erosion, ensuring your structure remains stable.
  4. Heavy Loads: If your new construction project involves heavy loads, such as commercial buildings, warehouses or multi-story structures, helical piers can distribute these loads effectively. Engineering considerations should confirm the necessity of deep foundations to support large structures adequately.
  5. Seismic Activity: In regions prone to earthquakes, helical piers can provide additional stability and resistance against seismic activity. They are designed to accommodate ground motion, making them an effective choice.
  6. Time and Cost Efficiency: Helical pier installation is generally quicker than traditional foundation systems, potentially saving time and reducing labor costs. If your project is on a tight timeline or budget, helical piers may be the solution you need.

Benefits of Atlanta Pre-Construction Piers

Considering a pre-construction/new construction helical pier support system can be a game changer for your project. They are:

  • Versatile: They can be used in almost any soil type, making them suitable for various projects and locations.
  • Minimally Disturbing: Helical piers require less excavation than traditional foundations, minimizing site disruption and preserving landscaping.
  • Strong: They can accommodate significant vertical and lateral loads, adding reliability to your foundation.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Compared to conventional methods, the installation process is less intrusive and generates less waste.

Understanding the signs that indicate the need for these systems is crucial for ensuring the safety and longevity of your structure. If you identify any of the mentioned concerns at your construction site, consult a foundation specialist at Anglin’s Foundation & Masonry Repairs. We can provide a thorough assessment to guide you in making the best choice for your building’s foundation needs.

From start to finish, everyone at Anglin's was amazing! Gus was responsive, always answered his phone, knowledgeable, professional, honest and fair. He went above and beyond to make a stressful situation less stressful. Scheduling was a breeze and the crew that arrived on the job (on time, I might add) were courteous, respectful and efficient. They allowed me to watch and take pictures, and explained the process step-by-step, as well as what results were to be expected. Iggy was so knowledgeable, professional and amazing. He was able to pin point a problem that 2 other competing companies couldn't explain or relay in layman's terms what needed to be done and why. He was an absolute superstar in easing the mind of the buyers purchasing the house. His 27 years experience was so valuable. Shelly was quick to send paid invoices and warranty information. Everyone did an amazing job and I would recommend them highly.

Today was a install of a 2nd beam for our house... first one was easy, 2nd one gave them a run for their money. But they stuck it out and got it done! Awesome work! I'd throw a + behind my 5 stars if I could. Sorry I held your crew up, but they were determined to get it done with no issues. So shout out to your team Chris, Leo and Dan!

The team that lifted our chimney was prompt, courteous and efficient. Other then the repair, you simply could not tell they were even there despite the fact they had to remove part of our deck to do the work. I would HIGHLY recommend them.

Diagnosis and estimate from a picture, arrived as scheduled, done in just a couple hours and results were absolutely amazing. Price, workmanship, clean up - everything was absolutely 5 star!! Highly recommend these folks!!! I must add, 2 other well known and much advertised companies came out and estimated 6x the work and price, claiming we had more issues than what was actually going on. These guys call it like it is - honesty and integrity are hard to find in construction.

This crew is top notch. Worked with the office and mainly with Gus on site who was great. Showed up early, super knowledgeable, tons of experience. We really felt served in the way he recommended only what needed to be done and at a great price. Had another company wanting to add in other extras and unnecessary work. HIGHLY recommend Anglin!!

Quick to call back and totally honest. I wasn't sure if I had a foundation issue or a flooring issue but after a few questions, Nathan helped to figure out that it thankfully wasn't a foundation issue. Insteand of trying to sell me a job, Nathan helped me to make a good decision. I hope I never have foundation issues but if I do, this is the company I'm hiring.

Another masonry contractor referred us to Anglin because we had a concern about the structural integrity of our chimneys. We were told that they were the best people to talk to. I called them and they actually came by to assess my house within two hours. Although I was fully prepared to spend a lot of money to stabilize my chimneys, he did a full assessment and very honestly told me that my chimneys were fine and just needed some caulking where the mortar met the brick. I greatly respect his expertise and honesty and would recommend him without reservation.
